BOOK OF SAND is an enigma befitting its namesake tome. Although self-described as “true anarchist black metal” by the shadowy entity behind the project, BOOK OF SAND easily transcends the simple musical genre by embracing the chaos of their noted philosophy through the use of alternative instrumentation and a unique production style. The Bees and the Butterflies, originally released as a limited edition CDr in 2011, is an album which looks to the past for inspiration, finding it in the timeless melodies of centuries-old English folk songs. The result is a dense, cinematic collection of compositions that are equal parts black/doom metal and historical storytelling, finding a perfect balance somewhere in the middle. The Bees and the Butterflies spans six tracks and prominently features a violin on most of them, furthering the old-fashioned nature of the project’s ambitious cross-era aesthetic.

The Bees and the Butterflies has been hand-cut in real time on antique lathe cutting machinery in mono to enhance the bass-heavy nature of the recording & production.

Originally released as a CDr in 2011 on Mouthbreather Records.

Notice: Due to the hand-made nature of lathe cut records, the fidelity & consistency of each copy will vary slightly. An assortment of audio ailments such as dropouts, warble, pitch-bending, static, crackle, hiss & extreme frequency shifting are to be expected, and all flaws which may arise are entirely condoned as adding cohesion to the release concept.

10″ clear / black polycarbonate lathe cut records cut into 1/16″ thick polycarbonate, with hand-stamped logo in center on A-side. Recycled chipboard jackets with 2-color black & white silkscreen printing on front & back. Includes download card.
